NATURALIZED BASINS

A naturalized basin will improve our watershed and streams in several ways:
*The deeper root systems of trees, shrubs and wildflowers encourage water to infiltrate the aquifer and thereby recharge ground water tables. This will increase stream base flows during dry periods.
*Plants increase water quality by trapping sediment and many pollutants found in storm water runoff after heavy periods of rain.
*The density of vegetation in a naturalized basin helps to slow the storm water velocity, reduce flooding impacts and cool the water temperature.
*Wildflowers, trees and shrubs planted in basins can beautify a neighborhood and increase property values.
*The naturalized basin will require less mowing and thus reduce maintenance costs to taxpayers.

Motorized Scooters

Over the summer, the Police Department took many complaints from residents about children riding motorized scooters (Go-Peds) on roads and sidewalks. The complaints included noise, the danger to pedestrians and others from the speed of these vehicles, danger to the riders who typically don’t wear safety equipment, and the list goes on. Officers have spoken to children and parents, and heard a laundry list of excuses. The bottom line is that Go-Ped type motorized scooters cannot legally be driven on a street or sidewalk. They can only be operated on private property with the permission of the owner.

Below is a brief summary of the PA Vehicle Code:

-75 PACS Sect. 102 A Go-Ped fits the legal definition of both “Vehicle” and “Motor Vehicle.”

-75 PACS Sect. 102 “Motor-driven cycles” and “motorized pedal cycles” are “motorcycles” by legal definition. All traffic laws apply.

-75 PACS Sect. 1301 Requires that all “Vehicles” driven on a road to have a license plate.

-75 PACS Sect. 1786 Requires that all “Vehicles” with a license plate have to be insured.

-75 PACS Sect. 1501 Requires anyone driving a “motor vehicle” on a road to have a driver’s license.

In the interest of public safety, the Police Department will take appropriate action when operators of these vehicles break the law.

Safety Message

The number of home fires caused by candles has been soaring in recent years according to the National Fire Prevention Association. It is believed that they have increased as much a 20% per year in recent years.

Candle fires are more common around holidays, because more people use candles and decorations are often near them. Candle fires peak on Christmas Day - they accounted for 10% of home fires on Christmas 1999 - followed by New Years and Christmas Eve.

Four out of 10 times candle fires began when they were left unattended, abandoned or inadequately controlled. One in four times, something that catches fire easily was left too close to the flame. Sometimes children play with the candle. Sometimes people fall asleep with one or more candles lit.

Lighting a candle is lighting a fire in your home. It must be treated with respect and the potential it posses. If the flame on the candle finds additional fuel, the beauty of the candle can become a deadly and destructive fire.

Please, never leave a room that has a lit candle.

NOTICE TO WARWICK TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS

Dear Resident:

Our community has available to us the community alert network (CAN) system. This is a sophisticated emergency warning service that operates around the clock.

This system is used for alerting residents in the event of a disaster. It could warn you of a sudden dangerous storm coming or to notify you to stay indoors because of a dangerous toxic cloud coming your way.

Listed telephone numbers are programmed into this system at the 911 center. If you have a non-listed telephone number, you would not be notified as fast as someone with a listed number.

Should you want your unlisted number listed into this CAN system, please send your name, address and telephone number to our office and we will arrange to have it entered into the emergency alerting system data base.

Your telelphone number will be kept confidential. Should you want to discuss this further you may call me at 215/343-6100.

Respectfully,

Edward Pfeiffer,
Warwick Township
Emergency Management Coordinator

DEFECTIVE SMOKE ALARMS

Warwick Township Fire Marshal has received several reports from homeowners in Hampton Chase that their smoke alarms activate for no apparent reason. Some people have turned off the circuit breaker that supplies electricity to the detectors. Their smoke alarms are not working!

The same model of smoke detector was used in all of these homes. These detectors have  high malfunction rate and must be replaced. Homeowners are strongly encouraged to have an electrician replace the detectors with batteries for back-up protection.

Consideration should be given to adding smoke alarms to all bedrooms and connecting them to the present smoke alarm system.

The cost of adding detectors to the present system is minimal when the electrician is already at your home. By adding these detectors, your home will be up to the latest building and fire code standards for smoke alarms. Your family will have the earliest detection of fire and the greatest amount of time escape.

Please contact the Fire Marshal at
(215) 343-6100 if you have any questions or if you would like to have your present smoke alarms tested free of charge.
