Yield to Blue Lights

The Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code permits blue lights on vehicles operated by volunteer firefighters, ambulance personnel, and fire police. The flashing blue lights are a visual request to drivers to yield the right-of-way and allow emergency responders to react quickly and safely to all emergencies.

Volunteers are dispatched to house fires, vehicle extrications, floods, medical and electrical emergencies, and other crises. Citizens who call 9-1-1 to report an emergency expect a prompt response. Please yield to blue light responders as if they were heading to an emergency involving your own family.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter can call or visit the station on Tuesday evenings between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.  Firefighters must be 16 years old or older. There is a Cadet firefighter program for 14 and 15 year olds.   The company provides training and turnout gear, insurance, pager, etc.  New volunteer firefighters, administrative members and auxiliary members are always welcome.

OPEN BURNING

Open burning is not permitted in the township. This includes leaves and other yard materials. Burning in a drum is not permitted. Special exceptions must be forwarded to the department of Environmental Protection for approval. Open burning is not just a fire issue, but an environmental issue as well.

SMOKE ALARMS

Smoke alarms save lives. The current ordinance for new homes requires a smoke detector on each level, one in each bedroom, and a heat detector in the garage. Each smoke detector is 110 volt powered with a 9-volt battery back-up. When one device activates they will all activate and make noise. This is a standard that every home should and could be upgraded to. Call an electrician to have an improved smoke detector system installed. Attic access provides the ability to run interconnection wires to each bedroom. Smoke detectors without battery back-up should be replaced.

DEFECTIVE SMOKE ALARMS

Warwick Township Fire Marshal has received several reports from homeowners in Hampton Chase that their smoke alarms activate for no apparent reason. Some people have turned off the circuit breaker that supplies electricity to the detectors. Their smoke alarms are not working!

The same model of smoke detector was used in all of these homes. These detectors have  high malfunction rate and must be replaced. Homeowners are strongly encouraged to have an electrician replace the detectors with batteries for back-up protection.

Consideration should be given to adding smoke alarms to all bedrooms and connecting them to the present smoke alarm system. The cost of adding detectors to the present system is minimal when the electrician is already at your home. By adding these detectors, your home will be up to the latest building and fire code standards for smoke alarms. Your family will have the earliest detection of fire and the greatest amount of time escape.

Please contact the Fire Marshal at (215) 343-6100 if you have any questions or if you would like to have your present smoke alarms tested free of charge.
